Biblical stories of eighteen New Testament women who Jesus encouraged, empowered, and loved.

When a Woman meets Jesus, BookHow could a man who had no wife, no children, no home, no job, no money, and wandered the hills of Judea with twelve men relate to women of his time, much less women in the 21st century?

That's the question that led author, Dorothy Valcárcel, to search for biblical women whose lives intersected with Jesus. As she explored the lives of every woman Jesus met, she discovered that they faced many of the same challenges women encounter today.

Devotional Week 35 Monday

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Learn the unforced rhythms of My grace and you will find rest for your souls.”

Matthew 11: 28

EXPLORATION

“Rest For Our Weariness”

Is there something in my life that has caused me great weariness?

Have I let Jesus take my weariness and replace it with His rest?

Give Me Your Weariness

“Lord,

You said so gently,

So persistently to me:

‘Give Me your weariness

And I’ll give you My rest.’

I did – finally.

You did – immediately

Then, Lord, I marveled

That I had waited so long.”

Ruth Harms Calkin

INSPIRATION

“Jesus, You said,

‘Come to Me all who are weary and heavy

laden and I will give you rest.’

I come, Lord, tired and dejected,

But I come –

Knowing You will refresh me;

Knowing You will give me strength

For another day;

Knowing You will surround me

With Your love.

I come,

And leave my burdens at your feet.”

Rosemary Atkins

            We have all had times when we were tired. Perhaps we worked or exercised too much. Possibly we didn’t sleep at night. Whatever the reason, when weariness envelopes us, it not only causes physical fatigue, it can cause mental fatigue as well.

            I’ll never forget, in my younger, stupider days, when working at a small hospital in the mountains of Oregon, I told the supervisor if they needed someone to work extra shifts, call me. I had a loan when I finished school which I needed to pay off and so I thought some extra work would help. After working eight shifts in one week, it goes without saying – I was “bone” weary. In fact, when my head hit the pillow at night, I was too tired to sleep. It didn’t take long for me to realize that over-extending myself in this manner wasn’t a wise idea, no matter how much extra money I received in my paycheck.

            It isn’t just physical wear and tear that causes weariness to our bodies. What I believe to be worse sometimes is the constant drag of mental and emotional pain. It is this  destruction that like a leech, bleeds us dry of our lives, our hearts and our souls.

            In 1815, Edward Bickersteth, an Anglican minister, penned these words to his most well-known hymn, “Peace, Perfect Peace.”

“Peace, perfect peace,

By thronging duties pressed.

To do the will of Jesus,

This is rest.”

            Isn’t this the answer to our weariness? Often, what we think we need to do, may not be what God wants us to do. However, by accepting the “light” yoke of service to God, we find that as Jesus said, “You’ll find rest for your soul.”

            Author Joyce Rupp so beautifully conveys this thought in her poem found in her book, “Out Of The Ordinary.”

“I am leaning on the heart of God,

I am resting there in silence.

All the turmoil that exhausts me

is brought to bear on this great love.

No resistance or complaint is heard

as I lean upon God’s welcome.

There is gladness for my coming.

There is comfort for my pain.

I lean, and lean, and lean

upon this heart that hurts with me.

Strength lifts the weight of my distress.

Courage wraps around my troubles.

No miracle of instant recovery.

No taking away of life’s burdens.

Yet, there is solace for my soul,

and refuge for my exiled tears.

It is enough for me to know

the heart of God is with me,

full of mercy and compassion,

tending to the wounds I bear.”

            Today, in the middle of rushing about, may you find that Jesus’ rest, brings refreshment to your tired body and your weary heart and soul.

  All That Wearies Me

“To Thee I bring my care,

The care I cannot flee;

Thou wilt not only share

But bear it all for me;

O living Savior, now to Thee

I bring the load that wearies me.”

Frances Ridley Havergal

1836-1879

AFFIRMATION

“Help of the tired ones,

I am in need tonight –

so weary I can hardly think

or pray aright;

but you have known the toil,

the grief, the strain

of human suffering,

and felt the pain

of utter weariness –

the sting of tears, fatigue –

and so you know my need.

I have no words to say,

but in my heart

I pray.”

Mary Ester Burgoyne

“And my (daughters) shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings and in quiet resting places.”

Isaiah 32: 18
