Macbeth

 

           

            I have always been fond of English literature.  Both in high school and college, every time I saw any type of English literature class on the schedule, I tried to rearrange my classes so I could attend the class.

 

            Obviously, this meant I read many of the plays written by William Shakespeare.  While some of what he wrote was light-hearted, what I consider to be one of his darkest works is the play, Macbeth. This tragedy, which focuses on Macbeth’s bloody rise to power through evil deeds such as murder, takes the reader down a path filled with guilt-ridden deeds of evil.

 

            As this play unfolds, we find that evil breeds evil, leaving the characters in this tragedy feeling as though life is a worthless endeavor, as noted by one of the most famous quotes ever penned, “Life is a tale told by an idiot.”

 

            However, it is what is spoken before this famous line that makes the final sentence have such impact:

 

            “Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,

            Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,

            To the last syllable of recorded time,

            And all our yesterdays have lighted fools

            The way to dusty death. Out, out brief candle!

            Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player,

            That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,

            And then is heard no more.”

 

            It is at this point, after lamenting how useless and futile our lives are the speaker informs us life is nothing but a tale told by “an idiot.”

 

            Let me ask you something.  Has your life ever seemed futile?  Have you ever felt purposeless?  Have you walked aimlessly about?  Have you wondered why you existed and where you were going?

 

            What I love about Jesus is that He understood that sometimes in all our lives, each one of us might feel confused. We might, like Shakespeare, even liken our lives to a candle that can be blown out with one quick puff of air.  And so Jesus looked at Thomas and all His other followers down through the ages and said: “I am the Way, the Truth, the Life.”  Or, as this reads in the Greek: “I am the Road, I am what is true, I am with you forever.”

 

            I like to paraphrase Jesus’ words this way.

 

            “Are you lost?  I am the right road.  I am the path you need to follow.  Just follow My footsteps.”

 

            “Are you hunting for the truth? I am what is always true.  I am verifiable truth.  Listen to My words. You can trust what I say.”

 

            “Are you searching for a purpose-filled life?  I am your Life.  Not just today but for a lifetime.”

 

            In the beautiful words of Christian author and teacher Stephen Neill, “Life is filled with meaning as soon as Jesus Christ enters into it.”

 

            That’s all it takes, an open door to Jesus who enters and shines a light so we may see where we are going.  So we can hear His words of truth. And so we can have meaning to our lives every day.

 

            “Make me remember, O God,

            that every day is Your gift

            and ought to be used according

            to Your command, through

            Jesus Christ our Lord.”
