Biblical stories of eighteen New Testament women who Jesus encouraged, empowered, and loved.

When a Woman meets Jesus, BookHow could a man who had no wife, no children, no home, no job, no money, and wandered the hills of Judea with twelve men relate to women of his time, much less women in the 21st century?

That's the question that led author, Dorothy Valcárcel, to search for biblical women whose lives intersected with Jesus. As she explored the lives of every woman Jesus met, she discovered that they faced many of the same challenges women encounter today.

Devotional Week 5 Saturday

“See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.”

Isaiah 49:16

New International Version

EXPLORATION

 Day 6: How God embraces me with His remembrance.

“He remembered to love us, a bonus to His dear family … indefatigable love.”

Psalm 98:3

The Message

What time in my life did I feel lonely and wanted to know God remembered me?

INSPIRATION

“When you feel you are all alone remember there are other angels whose sole purpose is to embrace the lonely.”

Corrine de Winter

The other day, after spending time reading about Helen Keller, I began mentally to make a list of individuals whom I wish I had been able to meet in their lifetime. Helen Keller would definitely be on the list. So would Mother Teresa, C.S. Lewis and Dr. Paul Brand.

Dr. Brand was the son of missionary parents who served in India. His young life was spent in the mountains of southwest India. Growing up, Mr. Brand decided he wanted to become a carpenter and builder. He had no plans to become a physician like his father.

However, at nine years of age, he was sent to London to school and his interest in medicine increased. He graduated from London University School of Medicine where he met his wife, who was also a physician.

In 1946, the Brands returned to India where Dr. Brand’s skill as a carpenter and builder assisted him in the treatment and retraining of victims of leprosy who had sustained traumatic injuries to their hands and feet.

Dr. Brand’s legendary skills as an orthopedic surgeon, specializing in some of the most innovative surgical procedures for the reconstruction of deformed hands, made him known worldwide.

As Dr. Brand once noted, because of his specialty, when he met people, his eyes were drawn to look at the individuals’ hands. The work of Dr. Brand meant much more to me after having my own left hand and elbow crushed. My left hand drew in like a claw and for the first time in my life, I understood how critical our hands are to everything we do. Not a minute goes by, unless I am sleeping, when I’m not using my hands for some task. Quite frankly, hands are right at the center of all our activity.

This is why Dr. Brand’s work with individuals who had contracted leprosy was so life-changing. He understood the importance of being able to function on a daily basis – and hands are vital, and necessary, even critical.

As you think about the “central role” hands play in our everyday living, I’d like you to reflect that it is God, Himself, who said, “I have engraved you on the palms of my hands” (Isaiah 49:16, New International Version).

Understanding more about the importance of my hands has helped me to look at this text in a new light. What I see is my name – emblazoned on the hand of My Heavenly Father. A radiant light that says, “Dorothy” everytime God uses His hands – everytime He moves – everytime He does anything! And since God assures us He never slumbers or sleeps, this means that my name – your name – all of our names are ever before God. We are always in His remembrance – for how can you forget someone whose name is engraved on the palm of your hand?

I want to leave you with these beautiful words written by E. White: “Never will our Lord betray one who trusts in Him. As His children draw near to Him for protection, in pity and love He lifts up a standard … ‘Touch them not,’ He says, ‘For they are mine. I have graven them upon the palms of my hands.’”

May you remember today, that your loving Heavenly Father has your name, permanently engraved on the palms of His hands. He will always remember you. Aren’t you thankful your Father never forgets you?

“God, early in the morning I cry to you.

Help me to pray

And to concentrate my thoughts on you:

I cannot do this alone.

In me there is darkness,

But with you there is light;

I am lonely, but you do not leave me;

I am feeble in heart, but with you there is help;

I am restless, but with you there is peace.

In me there is bitterness, but with you there is patience;

I do not understand your ways,

But you know the way for me …

Restore me to liberty,

And enable me so to live now

That I may answer before you and before me

Lord, whatever this day may bring,

Your name be praised.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

“Remember, O Lord, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old … according to Your love remember me, for You are good, O Lord.”

Psalm 25:6-8

New International Version
