Biblical stories of eighteen New Testament women who Jesus encouraged, empowered, and loved.

When a Woman meets Jesus, BookHow could a man who had no wife, no children, no home, no job, no money, and wandered the hills of Judea with twelve men relate to women of his time, much less women in the 21st century?

That's the question that led author, Dorothy Valcárcel, to search for biblical women whose lives intersected with Jesus. As she explored the lives of every woman Jesus met, she discovered that they faced many of the same challenges women encounter today.

Devotional Week 24 Tuesday

“Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly. He said, ‘Hearken, all Judah, you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you King Jehoshaphat. The Lord says this to you: Be not afraid or dismayed at this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.’”

II Chronicles 20: 14, 15

Amplified Bible

EXPLORATION

“Remember Who Is In Command!”

“Trust God even when the pieces don’t seem to fit.”

John Hercus

Is there a challenge I’m facing in my life right now which encourages me to remember who is really in charge of my life?

“How blest Thy saints! How safely led!

How surely kept! How richly fed!

Saviour of all in earth and sea,

How happy they who rest in Thee.”

Henry Francis Lyte

INSPIRATION

“The outlook may be dark, but if we know the secret of the uplook…we shall find our God is able to deliver.”

J. Charles Stern

As we began our study about King Jehoshaphat yesterday, we found that he faced a triple threat – the Moabites, the Ammonites and the Meunites. We read in II Chronicles  20: 3 that this caused the king to be fearful and I ask you, “Who wouldn’t have been afraid?” These three threats had the potential of defeating the nation of Judah. What “triple threat” is trying to take you down?

Thankfully, the Bible doesn’t leave us or the king blanketed in fear. Instead, we are told that this threatening situation drove King Jehoshaphat to his knees. Not only did he pray, but he called on all of Judah to pray, too.

And with this commitment, combined with faith in God’s power, a respected Levite, with a distinct family history of service to God, was impressed by the Spirit of God to share a message with not only the king but all of the people of Judah. What a message of encouragement it was! Jahaziel said, “Don’t be afraid because of the size of the force that is coming against you.” I love the fact that the first thing Jahaziel reminded the king is that numbers or size do not matter with God. Whether it was a huge Goliath against the boy David or three nations against one nation – our God is not impressed or intimidated by numbers.

Jahaziel wanted everyone to get their eyes off the number of people who were headed in their direction. Instead, Jahaziel encouraged the king and the people of Judah to look to their commander. Jahaziel instructed everyone to take their eyes off the enemy and focus their attention on who was leading the battle. As he reminded everyone, “For the battle is not yours, but God’s” (II Chronicles 20: 15).

What timely advice for you and me today as we run into daily challenges that, like the triple threat that came up against the people of Judah, frighten us and cause us to be fearful and scared.

When Jesus was on earth, he encouraged His followers with the word, “Nothing is impossible with God” (Luke 1: 37). This was the same exhortation that Jahaziel gave the king and the people of Judah. “Don’t look at the size of what is against you, don’t be fearful by the enormity of the task in front of you, instead look at who the commander is. And remember, the battle belongs to God not to you.” Isn’t that a relief? You and I don’t have to plan a strategy, the commander has already done that. And when we put our faith in Him, He will take us through the sea, over the mountains, and up the cliff, for never forget, the battle is His not ours. What an encouragement as we face daily trials that because of their size can completely overwhelm us. Let us never forget who the battle belongs to and Who is in command.

“You will never understand why God does what He does, but if you believe Him, that is all that is necessary. Let us learn to trust Him for who He is.”

Elisabeth Elliot

“O Lord Jesus Christ,

stay beside me to defend me,

within me to guide me,

before me to lead me,

behind me to guard me,

and above me to bless me;

that with You and in You

I may live and move and

have my being for ever and ever.”
