Biblical stories of eighteen New Testament women who Jesus encouraged, empowered, and loved.

When a Woman meets Jesus, BookHow could a man who had no wife, no children, no home, no job, no money, and wandered the hills of Judea with twelve men relate to women of his time, much less women in the 21st century?

That's the question that led author, Dorothy Valcárcel, to search for biblical women whose lives intersected with Jesus. As she explored the lives of every woman Jesus met, she discovered that they faced many of the same challenges women encounter today.

Devotional Week 34 Thursday

“Day and night I’ll stick with God; I’ve got a good thing going and I’m not letting go.”

Psalm 16: 8

The Message Bible

“God Is With Us”

“This morning my soul is greater than the world, since it possesses You, whom heaven and earth cannot contain.”

Margaret of Cortona

Have I asked God for His presence in my life today?

“We are always in the presence of God.”

Teresa of Avila

All of us have times in our lives when we face trials that can overwhelm us and leave us despairing of life itself. But while intense pain, sorrow, loneliness and depression can knock us down, we have been promised that underneath each of us are Heavenly wings – arms of strength – that not only keep us from falling but carry us when we are too weak to walk. The Scottish born pastor, J. H. Oldham, penned these inspiring words: “A living faith is not something you have to carry, but something that carries you.” It is this faith we must rely on in times of darkness. However, this faith isn’t something that just happens. Lesslie Newbigin, a British United Reformed Church theologian, describes the development of faith in our lives this way: “The life of faith is a continually renewed victory over doubt, a continually renewed grasp of meaning in the midst of meaninglessness.”

If today you find yourself facing a wall of tragedy and the fog of aloneness has enveloped you and you cannot see your way out – call out to our God for He promises never to “leave us or forsake us.” If your faith and trust in His ability to see you through hangs by a thread – reach out anyway – for His power and strength will carry you through.

When I was in the hospital trying to recuperate from all the damage done to my body and to my spirit during our car accident, I felt alone and forgotten by God. But at this time, I was given a prayer book by Sister Laurana, one of the chaplains at the hospital where I was taken. In it was a prayer that encouraged me to reach out to God and hang on tightly. I want to share this prayer with you today.

When I Am Discouraged

“FATHER, I come before You

during this time of darkness.

All sense of joy and happiness

has left me;

my days seem hopeless

I feel I want to cry.

FATHER, listen to me;

deliver me from despair.

Help me not to concentrate

upon myself or allow self-pity

to overwhelm me.

FATHER, I pray for a deeper

awareness of Your presence;

I so want to rely upon You.

Help me remember that You

are always with me.

Instill in me the confidence

that if I really trust You

You will bring good from all

that happens to me.

Take away all anxiety and fear,

all that is not of You.

Give me Your peace and Your hope

at this hour and always.

Strengthen, me by the power of

Your Holy Spirit.”

Whatever obstacle you confront, whatever sorrow you bear, whatever pain you endure – God’s presence is there with you. Trust Him. Have faith in Him. He will never let you down.

“May the everlasting Father Himself take you in His own generous clasp, in His own generous arms.”

Celtic Prayer

“My Lord and my God, take

me from all that keeps

me from Thee.

My Lord and my God, grant

me all that leads me

To Thee.

My Lord and my God, take

Me from myself and give

Me completely to Thee!”

Nicholas of Flue

“Look upon us, O Lord,

and let all the darkness of our souls vanish

before the beams of thy brightness.

Fill us with holy love,

and open to us the treasures of thy wisdom.

All our desire is known unto thee,

therefore perfect what thou hast begun,

and what thy Spirit has awakened us to ask in prayer

we seek thy face

turn thy face unto us and show us thy glory.

Then shall our longing be satisfied,

and our peace shall be perfect.”

Augustine
